Update on Vermont's Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard Legislation

The Time Argus reported yesterday on the debate in the Vermont Senate over the recently proposed renewable energy portfolio standard legislation: "The Senate has twice passed so-called renewable portfolio standards, which would require utilities to buy a certain percentage of their power from renewable sources, only to have the bills defeated in the House. With Democrats in control of both the Senate and the House, this year supporters hope the legislation will go all the way, but are facing Republican opposition."

The RPS legislation could eventually force a showdown between the Democratically controlled legislature, and Republican Gov. Jim Douglas, who during his campaign last fall said he was opposed to an RPS in Vermont.
