Farmers Look to Harvest and Sell Wind Energy

Agriculture Online has a report on a recent conference in Iowa on the synergy between local farming operations and wind power development.

The "Introduction to Wind Energy and Energy Crops; a Conference for Farmers" - which was sponsored by the Iowa Farmers Union Foundation, the Iowa Energy Center, and the Center for Energy and Environmental Education - focused on wind farming issues in the Midwest, but the topics discussed at the conference are relevant to farmers across the U.S.. For example, in the Northeast, and particularly in upstate New York, developers are using similar lease arrangements with local farmers to develop larger scale wind farms.

The article reviews the benefits and drawbacks of leasing land to wind developers and offers some tips for farmers who are considering installing their own turbines.
